With 569 yes-votes, 4 against and 41 abstentions, the almost unanimous EU Parliament passed the condemnation on Wednesday afternoon in Strasbourg.

However, it will have no tangible consequences for Turkey.

Swedish V-member Jonas Sjöstedt says that the large consensus behind the condemnation is extremely rare.

This is a clear signal to Turkey that now this is a matter between the EU and Turkey, and now Joakim Medin must be released.

The Sweden Democrats' member Dick Erixon hopes for continued criticism against Turkey.

This is an Islamist regime that imprisons journalists, he says.

Sanctions not an option

A united EU makes it harder for Turkey to ignore the demands, according to the Social Democrats' Evin Incir.

Now we have set demands towards the member states to act jointly for our joint citizen.

M-parliamentarian Tomas Tobé said before the vote that it is not an option to, for example, withdraw grants or impose sanctions on Turkey.

It is very rare that you do it for individual cases. It is no secret that we have a lot of comments when it comes to upholding human rights in Turkey on the one hand, on the other hand, we need to cooperate with Turkey.

Demanding joint action

On Wednesday, Swedish parliamentarians from the Social Democrats, the Left Party, and the Green Party have also taken the initiative to send a letter to the EU's Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas to take action to ensure that Medin is released. The letter has been sent to other Swedish members for signature before it is taken further to Kallas.

Corrected: In an earlier version, it was stated that Swedish EU parliamentarians had sent a letter to the EU's Foreign Minister Kallas on Wednesday. Correct is that the letter has not been sent yet.

Journalist Joakim Medin traveled to Istanbul on March 27 on behalf of the newspaper Dagens ETC to report on widespread protests in the country, after Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested.

Medin, who has visited Turkey as a journalist several times, was arrested directly at the airport.

Afterwards, he was transferred to the high-security prison Marmara in Silivri outside Istanbul, where many of Turkey's political prisoners are or have been. Medin is sitting in the same department as the imprisoned mayor Imamoglu.

On April 23, he was charged with participating in a terrorist organization, spreading terrorist propaganda, and insulting the president. In a first trial in Ankara regarding the charge of insulting the president, he was sentenced to a conditional sentence.
