Sweden Urged to Boost Palestinian Support and Freeze Israel Trade Deal

Sweden should increase support to the Palestinian self-government and freeze the trade agreement with Israel. This is written by the Social Democrats' party leader Magdalena Andersson and foreign policy spokesperson Morgan Johansson on SvD Debatt.

In the debate article, the Social Democratic Party leaders welcome the wave of recognition of an independent Palestinian state that is currently underway.

"But at the same time, we see how Netanyahu's right-wing government is working deliberately and explicitly to stop all future opportunities for Palestinian self-determination," they write.

To preserve the possibility of a future two-state solution, they want Sweden and the EU to both increase support for the Palestinian Authority and resume support for the UN's aid organization for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa.

"Hamas is an Islamist terrorist organization that, in our opinion, should not play any future role in the governance of Palestine. Also for this reason, the Palestinian Authority needs to be strengthened," they write.

They also want the trade agreement that the EU signed with Palestinian representatives in 1997 on trade, among other things, to be rewritten into a permanent association agreement.

At the same time, they want to put pressure on Israel by freezing the trade agreement and imposing sanctions on extreme settlers and ministers. In addition, they want to introduce a "national law against trade in goods and services from settlers on occupied land".

"Sweden should not contribute to the normalization of the settlements. It is something Sweden can do here and now”.

The government abolished support for Unrwa in December 2024, after Israel banned the organization. Aid to the region has instead been provided through other organizations, which has been met with criticism.
