In March, the government appointed an inquiry into a ban on fur farming. In practice, it concerns mink farming, which is the only fur production in Sweden.

However, the industry is not waiting for the results of the inquiry, but is instead winding down itself.

Mink breeders who shut down their operations before June 30 this year have the opportunity to receive money from the state, and all 27 remaining breeders have now applied for it, according to ATL. Those who are approved will share 180 million kronor, based on the number of breeding females.

The mink breeders who are now winding down and taking this support, they are the mink farming in Sweden. It feels unrealistic and unthinkable that someone would start up completely new, regardless of the circumstances, says Jörgen Martinsson, CEO of the industry organization Svensk Mink, to the newspaper.

The industry organization itself is also in the process of winding down, but remains in place during the process with compensation.
