"Sida has during the day contacted our humanitarian cooperation partners and emphasized that the money can be used flexibly to quickly meet people's acute needs after the earthquake", says Jakob Wernerman, head of Sida's humanitarian department, in a press release.

A quake with an estimated magnitude of 7.7 struck Southeast Asia on Friday morning, Swedish time. The US Geological Survey fears thousands of fatalities.

The worst damage after the earthquake is feared in conflict-ridden and junta-ruled Myanmar. The quake's center was located in the country's central parts, at a depth of ten kilometers near the million-city Mandalay.
