SVT Play Services Disrupted by Overload Attacks, Expert Explains

Overload attacks have struck down SVT's play services on several occasions in recent days. Cyber security expert Marcus Nohlberg however compares the attacks to getting glue in a lock. It feels like the whole society is vulnerable. But it's not like that, he says.

The attackers have probably invested large resources in the attacks and want to send the message that Sweden is under attack, according to cybersecurity expert Marcus Nohlberg, docent at the University of Skövde.

It means nothing more than that one closes down a website. One does not get access to the content.

What has been hindered is the public's access to the play services – the service itself has not been hacked and SVT can continue with its socially important work, he emphasizes.

Overload attacks require a lot in terms of mainly competence and technical equipment, but can be bought on the Darknet for practically "anyone with bitcoin in their wallet", he emphasizes. At the same time, it is difficult to defend against such an attack. Even if they can cause large problems for a society, especially if they are directed at services such as Bankid, it is not always worth investing in trying to avoid them completely, according to Nohlberg.

We may have to get used to this kind of attack occurring.

As a security expert, he is more worried about what he calls "real hacks" and insider attacks, which get to sensitive information and can affect data.

There is nothing that suggests that SVT has actually been hacked in this way.
