Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) assumes that the plans for new nuclear power remain in place even if there is a shift in power in the election next year. – Reckless and nonchalant about a very important issue, believes The Social Democrats' energy policy spokesperson Fredrik Olovsson.

He adds:

It is obvious to everyone that a broad agreement is needed, not just about nuclear power but also about other forms of power so that we can get Swedish industrial production going.

Such an agreement would, according to Olovsson, also mean "a clear starting signal to industry that we have a commitment that is long-term and broad."

White spot

- She should also be aware that Swedish industry wants to have electricity in place before there can be (new) nuclear power as well. It's a white spot for the government.

A few weeks ago, it became clear that the government's energy talks with the opposition had ended without an agreement being reached.

One reason for this was that the Social Democrats and others in the opposition wanted offshore wind power to also be eligible for government support if new nuclear power receives it. The government's support party, the Sweden Democrats, is completely against it.

When the government's productivity commission presents a number of proposals for legislative and regulatory changes and other re-takes to get Sweden going, the desire for an agreement across party lines on energy policy was an important part.

Becomes more expensive

It would eliminate much of the uncertainty that can otherwise hold back private investments. We believe it will become more expensive for the state if you do not create the long-term rules, says Clas Olsson, chairman of the commission, at a press conference.

Svantesson says she understands the proposal but says the government is in charge and has a majority for its plans for new nuclear power. The Social Democrats are on board, according to her.

- I am not opposed to an energy agreement, it depends on what it contains. But we know now that the Social Democrats are positive about nuclear power and I perceive Magdalena Andersson as having a will from her side and her party to continue with nuclear power, says Elisabeth Svantesson to TT and adds:

- I feel calm and secure.

The plans for new nuclear power are stable and will not be torn up, according to the finance minister.

- It is my absolute conviction.
