159 people died in the fire on board the ferry Scandinavian Star off the coast of Sweden. Now, 36 years later, survivors and relatives are demanding compensation from the Danish state.

The majority of those who died were Norwegians, but Danes and Swedes were also among the dead.

The 47 people who have sued the Danish Maritime Authority are demanding more than 600,000 Swedish kronor in compensation. The ferry had been put into service on the Oslo–Fredrikshamn route just a week before the fire disaster and the newly hired crew had not carried out a fire drill.

A group of experts has previously concluded that the Swedish Maritime Administration should have carried out a port state control inspection before the ferry was put into service. If the deficiencies had been addressed, the extent of the disaster would likely have been reduced. The Swedish Maritime Administration disagrees and rejects the claim for damages.
