Very soon, by September 30, 2024, a special investigator will submit proposals for stricter requirements for Swedish citizenship. The goal is to strengthen the status of Swedish citizenship and promote inclusion and increase opportunities for citizens to actively participate in society.
The investigator's proposals will not change the constitution in any way.
The investigator is particularly focusing on:
- Increased knowledge of Swedish society and culture in Sweden to acquire citizenship
- Requirements for longer residency in Sweden
- Requirements for self-sufficiency
- Declaration of loyalty, citizenship conversations, and a ceremonial element in the process
- Requirements for a decent way of living
- Taking a stance on the procedure for reviewing the exemption of children from citizenship
- Submitting necessary legislative proposals
So, by September 30, we'll know what the investigator has come up with and submitted as proposals.
