"There are no plans for the Prime Minister to speak to President Putin. His focus on supporting Ukraine to ensure a just and lasting peace remains," the spokesman said on Friday.
Elsewhere on the continent, the tone has been different. In December, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe may need to talk to Russia again; otherwise, Europeans risk being sidelined in peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv, in which Washington plays a central role.
Similar tones were heard from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last week.
"I think the time has come for Europe to talk to Russia," she said.
