Speedway League Alters Rules to Preserve Sport's Future

Speedway league makes comprehensive changes to its rules for next season. All in order to save the sport. Had we not done this, three teams would have dropped out, says the league's chairman Mikael Holmstrand to Radiosporten.

The ceiling for the driver average per team is lowered from 11 to 10.5 points. In addition, each team must have two Swedish drivers with a maximum average of 1.25 points per heat.

These are some of the rule adjustments being made.

In practice, it means that fewer foreign stars will be driving in the series.

Had we been five teams left, it would not have been a series anymore. Then we are an exhibition sport. If we do not do this now, we would have damaged the sport in the long term, says Holmstrand.

Swedish speedway clubs have been struggling with economic problems for several years.

The Pirates from Motala welcome the rule changes.

If the rules that drive costs down were not changed, we would have been forced to say no to the highest speedway league and been forced to step down to the Allsvenskan, says the club's chairman Conny Svärdvall to Radiosporten.
