The idea of making the three regional languages official languages in the EU was raised during Spain's latest government negotiations. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez finally secured a continued majority by promising the regional parties in the regions to push for their languages within the EU.

However, it's not happening yet.

When the EU ministers of the member states took up the issue at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, there was broad resistance to a quick decision. Instead, it's now said that the issue is being "pushed into the future", according to an EU source.

Sweden has been among the skeptics - but is not saying a straight no.

We have deep understanding for the Spanish position and where this comes from, but in this context, we must still have a discussion about different aspects of what this implies for cooperation, for example, costs, said EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz (M) on her way into the meeting in Brussels.

Spain has offered to cover all translation costs if the three languages become official. At the same time, there are also question marks about what the consequences will be for other regional and local languages in the EU.
