Next week, the NATO countries are expected to agree on a new budget target to allocate at least 5 percent of their GDP to defense.
But Spain is resisting.
"For Spain, a 5 percent target is not only unreasonable but also counterproductive", writes Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, reports the news agency AFP.
Spain is one of the NATO countries that has long been furthest from meeting the current 2 percent target. Sanchez's government is also being pressured by discontent from the left and regional parties, which has made it difficult for the prime minister to push for increased defense spending.
