It was heavily down on the stock exchange in Tokyo since the US's incoming president Donald Trump threatened with tariffs against China, Mexico, and Canada.
The Nikkei 225 index was down 1.4 percent and the decline was just as large for the broader Topix index.
In South Korea, the Kospi was down 0.8 percent.
In China, the leading indexes were instead preceded by a plus. For the composite indexes in Shanghai and Shenzhen, it was up 0.4 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively, after a few hours of trading.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index showed an increase of 0.5 percent.
