The government and the Social Democratic Party recently presented their bill to lower the age of criminal responsibility. From August 2, anyone over the age of 13 who commits serious crimes such as murder and bombings will be subject to imprisonment.

The Social Democrats do not support the reduction to 13 years.

We will present our own proposal to temporarily lower the penalty to 14 years for the most serious crimes such as contract murder and aggravated rape, in accordance with the investigation's proposal, says Carvalho.

For juvenile prisons

However, The Social Democrats is behind the proposal itself regarding youth prisons, that is, moving responsibility for young people who have committed crimes from the State Board of Institutions to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

We will vote yes to that.

"We see that the attempts to get SiS in order have not worked. Today we can see that approximately 90 percent of the convicted youths relapse into crime," says Carvalho.

For young people

The Social Democrats will also present parts of its spring budget motion on Thursday. It concerns an additional 200 million kronor for social services, in addition to the 1.7 billion the party put into its shadow budget last fall, to identify children and young people who are at risk of falling into disarray.

These are additions that would have made a real difference in Swedish social services in their vital work of breaking the cycle of new recruitment, says Carvalho.

Carvalho believes that new recruitment into gangs is the government's "blind spot".

The Social Democrats also wants to give an extra 100 million kronor to women's shelters. According to The Social Democrats, both proposals are funded, but the budget motion has not been presented in its entirety yet.
