Tobias Baudin notes that the re-election - which in practice gives the green light for the Liberals' new line of allowing SD into a government if the Tidö parties win the next parliamentary election - means “a completely new situation in Swedish politics”.

"In black and white, we now see how the Sweden Democrats are leading the government negotiations in the Swedish right. Just as many have warned, the Moderates, through Ulf Kristersson's weak leadership, have finally lost the leading role to the Sweden Democrats and Jimmie Åkesson," Baudin writes in a comment and continues:

"The likelihood that Jimmie Åkesson will be able to take office as Prime Minister after the election this fall if Tidö wins the election has increased significantly."

MP: "Historical betrayal"

Daniel Helldén, one of the Green Party's spokespersons, writes in a comment that the Liberals' opening to sit in government with the SD is "a historic betrayal."

"The Liberals have gone from promising to keep the Sweden Democrats out of power to being the first to want to let them into government. It is a historic betrayal. What was previously an obvious limit in Swedish politics no longer exists, this fundamentally changes the political playing field," writes Helldén.

M: Can make it easier

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who is the leader of the Moderate Party, however, welcomes the announcement.

"Removing red lines between our four cooperating parties can facilitate my next government formation. I will soon invite my party leadership colleagues to a new joint planning meeting to prepare for the next term," Kristersson writes in an opinion piece in Aftonbladet.
