During their day at Almedalen in Visby, the Social Democrats are presenting a four-part package to increase pensions.

The first part, a “workers’ pension”, aims to increase the pension for those with strenuous jobs who cannot complete a full working life and therefore take early retirement. The Social Democrats want to introduce a means-tested transitional and workers’ pension. It should be possible to apply for it before the target age, with the aim of increasing the public pension at retirement.

Secondly, the Social Democrats want a broad review of the pension system and to investigate a bonus for those who start working early in life. For example, this could involve extra pension rights for those people with the aim of rewarding their contribution to the economy.

The third proposal is to raise pensions by increasing contributions to the pension system. The Social Democrats promise to work within the pension group - which consists of representatives from the eight parties in parliament - to increase contributions to 18.5 percent from the current 17.2 percent.

Fourthly, the Social Democrats want to investigate a statutory right to reduce working hours from the minimum withdrawal age in the pension system up to the target age. The aim is to enable more people to complete a full working life and to work longer overall, but with reduced hours.
