The Social Democratic Alliance party received 20.8 percent of the votes in the election and with that 15 of the 63 seats in the parliament in Reykjavik. It received more than double the support compared to the 2021 election.
Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, from the conservative Independence Party, has led a coalition where the Green Left and the center-right Progressive Party were included. He announced his resignation and called for new elections, after deep divisions arose in the compromise-oriented cooperation.
