A heavy snowfall is expected across Sweden over the New Year's weekend. The heaviest snowfall is expected in southern Norrland, where SMHI has issued an orange warning for snowfall combined with wind. It could be problematic on the roads both on New Year's Day and throughout the weekend, said Mattias Lind, meteorologist at SMHI.

Already on New Year's Eve, a light snowfall will move from Jämtland toward eastern Svealand, Öland and Gotland. But the real snow chaos will not begin until New Year's Day 2026 - and there is a warning.

It will snow in most of the country on New Year's Day, except possibly in the far north of Sweden. Götaland will briefly see milder weather and rain, but it will get colder again and there may eventually be some snow there, says Mattias Lind.

“Troublesome weather”

The most snow is expected in southern Norrland: Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Härjedalen and Jämtland can expect two to three decimeters of snow.

Locally it can be up to five decimeters, and it will continue to snow on Saturday and Sunday as well, so it will fill up even more.

At the same time, strong winds are expected, especially in Medelpad and the coastal region of Ångermanland.

It definitely looks like it will be difficult weather, says Mattias Lind.

SMHI has issued an orange warning for snowfall combined with wind in the southern coastal region of Norrland from Thursday morning to Friday morning, and a yellow warning for snowfall during Thursday morning in northeastern Svealand and southern Jämtland.

30 degrees below zero

New Year's Eve celebrants on their way home, or others who are going out on the roads, should be careful, however. The strong wind combined with the snow means there is a risk of drifting snow on the roads again.

It can be problematic on the roads during New Year's Day and throughout the weekend in many places in Svealand and especially in southern Norrland, says Mattias Lind.

It is good to follow the forecast and keep an eye on the warnings that appear.

In connection with the snowstorm, it will also be very cold in large parts of Sweden. From the weekend, you can expect freezing temperatures almost everywhere, which looks set to continue next week. It will be coldest in the far north.

In many places in northern Norrland it can drop below minus 30 degrees Celsius, maybe even colder, says Lind.
