The Road Administration: Prepared for the Worst

It is expected half a meter of snow – or more. The rescue service in Gävleborg is preparing with, among other things, caterpillar vehicles. We are prepared for the worst, says Beisi Sundin from the Swedish Transport Administration's press department.

The winter has reached southern Sweden, with accidents, queues, and cancelled ferries as a result.

During the evening and night, a significant amount of snow is expected from south of Gävle to a bit north of Hudiksvall.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued an orange warning for the coast and a few miles inland.

According to SMHI, there may be up to 90 centimeters of snow in some areas. But it's very uncertain, says alarm commander Håkan Eriksson.

We have secured extra staffing at the stations along the coast and in consultation with the Swedish Transport Administration, we have some snowplows that can help if needed.

"Awaiting what may come"

Besides the snow, it is expected to be windy, which risks worsening the situation. The large amounts of snow were expected to arrive between 8 pm and 10 pm, but at 8:30 pm, the Swedish Transport Administration reported that the traffic situation was relatively calm.

There has been snowfall all afternoon, not as heavy as we might have thought, but the wind hasn't picked up yet. So we're waiting and seeing what may come, says Beisi Sundin from the Swedish Transport Administration.

Earlier in the day, it was decided that fewer trains would run in the area due to the weather, so some departures have been cancelled.

We follow the weather forecast, so if necessary, we'll close, for example, the railway, so that there aren't any trains standing still along a line where people can't get out, says Sundin.

If you're traveling by train today, tonight, and tomorrow morning, you should keep a close eye on the information from your planned trip.

In addition to the snow warning between Gävle and Hudiksvall, SMHI has also issued a yellow warning for snow west and southwest of Lake Vänern.

Long queues

The snow and slippery roads led to several accidents in different areas already on Wednesday morning. This caused long queues in the Jönköping area.

We've been stuck in traffic for three and a half hours. It's a convoy of trucks that's stuck, said a truck driver to Jönköpings-Posten.

At the same time, the harsh weather caused Destination Gotland to cancel ferry traffic to and from Visby on Wednesday.

The SMHI's orange warning is valid until Thursday morning.

For Thursday, there are also yellow snow warnings in northeastern Svealand, in an area around the orange warning and up to Sundsvall, as well as in the coastal area of Västerbotten.
