The outdoor exhibit, which featured nine enslaved people in the residence of the first U.S. president, George Washington, was designed to "explore the paradox of slavery and freedom at the founding of the nation," according to the park’s own description.
The exhibition opened in 2010 when Barack Obama was president.
It was taken down following Donald Trump's executive directive to "focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people," the Department of the Interior told The New York Times.
