Mediating country Pakistan says the agreement is effective immediately and that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately. But several shipping companies are still hesitant to start sailing through the narrow strait.

"We are simply waiting until we have clear information," Hånell says, confirming that the shipping company has ships in the area.

Can start sailing

If Hånell receives word about any crucial points in the agreement, they can start sailing within a day.

"I hope we get clarity within the next 24 hours on exactly how this is going to work. If we get that, and it is certain, we will start moving."

Other shipping companies think the same way.

"Yes, there is a consensus on that aspect with competitors and so on. So we have the same opinion, everyone I talk to, anyway."

“Very unfortunate”

It is still unclear whether Iran will charge a fee for ships passing through the strait.

"We haven't seen exactly what the agreement says yet. But there's talk of it being some kind of tariff - we've seen indications of that. And it's very unfortunate if that's what it is in any way."

The US has claimed that traffic in the strait will now be “toll-free”, but Mohammad Ghalibaf, the speaker of parliament and Iran’s chief negotiator, seems to claim that this only applies during the 60-day period when a lasting peace agreement is to be negotiated.

Another question mark is the safety of the shipping companies.

"Then we will see how safety will be guaranteed, and we do not have any confirmation of that either," Hånell says.

The Strait of Hormuz accounts for a fifth of the world's oil and gas flows in peacetime. Since the Iran-Iraq war broke out on February 28, Iran has, to varying degrees, restricted traffic in the strait, while the United States has blocked Iranian ports.
