At least eight people have died, according to initial reports from the Kabul governor. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the city of Kunduz, according to both European and American geological institutes.
The earthquake, at a depth of 180 kilometers, was felt across large parts of both countries, and Afghan health authorities were put on alert.
The region is often prone to severe earthquakes, with death tolls that can be counted in the thousands.
In August, around 2,200 people died in a 6.0-magnitude earthquake.
