Scarlet: It's still a bit fetish

With ghost makeup, chains, flying "gimp"-veils and the duo's perhaps most melodic refrain to date, Scarlet is testing the boundaries in Melodifestivalen. I think Mello can handle the Scarlet level, says the vampire-made-up Thirsty.

Just like last year, when they competed with the entry "Circus X", Scarlet is offering a visually stunning number, with clothes, stage decorations and dancers that evoke a bdsm-dungeon in a vampire film.

We had a vision that we presented to SVT. They picked up some things and we changed others. But we wanted to keep our feeling from last year, says Scarlet Hunts, the skeleton-made-up half of Scarlet, after Thursday's rehearsals.

We still wanted to be in the Scarlet world. We wanted to include our creatures and build out the world even more, says Thirsty.

Many young fans

The metal duo was formed in 2018. Hidden behind their spooky alter egos, they have built an image of performance and horror film aesthetics, with diverse inspiration from artists like Rammstein and Lady Gaga.

But after last year's participation, they have gained a new audience at home in Sweden – many of them children, who like to dress up as Scarlet on Halloween. So how much horror film and fetish club can Melodifestivalen really handle?

It remains to be seen. When we were in the "viewing room" and saw it now, we thought that it's still a bit fetish, and that you might have to put a different spin on some places, says Scarlet Hunts.

But I think Mello can handle the Scarlet level, says Thirsty.

They have never had to compromise, explains Scarlet Hunts.

We don't want to come in with a lot of swearing, blood and psycho stuff, like the early Scarlet was. We've done that and we're past it now. We're at the right time and place, she says.

"More of everything"

The song "Sweet n' psycho" they have written together with Anderz Wrethov, Dino Medanhodzic and Jimmy "Joker" Thörnfeldt. It's more melodic than last year, with a pompous pop refrain with echoes of Abba and musical.

We have a lot of melodic stuff in our song bank, so it's not really new for us. But it's a damn fun song to do, it feels like all of us, says Thirsty.

It's also a bigger challenge. We felt that we needed more of everything – our vocal delivery, our choreography, the song, everything. So we threw ourselves out and took it from the top, says Scarlet Hunts.
