Amnesty International criticizes Saudi Arabia for an "alarming increase" in the use of the death penalty.

According to the human rights organization, the kingdom has executed at least 88 people since the beginning of the year, nearly twice as many as the same period last year. Amnesty reports that 52 of the executions were linked to drug offenses.

According to an earlier compilation by the news agency AFP, 338 people were executed in 2024. Of those executed, 117 were accused of being drug smugglers.

Saudi Arabia has stepped up the fight against drugs in recent years since the market for the central stimulant captagon has grown.
