On Monday morning, there were 34 people in the nursing homes who showed symptoms. Late in the afternoon, Region Sörmland announced that there are now 28 confirmed cases of salmonella.
Malin Enarsson, infectious disease doctor in Sörmland, tells Katrineholms-Kuriren that several residents have become so ill that they have needed to seek hospital care.
According to municipal director Sari Eriksson, it is still not possible to say how many of the four elderly who died during the weekend had symptoms and what the cause of death was. The infection was discovered last week. It is unclear where it comes from, but the two nursing homes have a shared kitchen.
On Friday, samples were taken in the kitchen. During the day, they have continued with sampling of food and also infection tracking, says Sari Eriksson to TT.
On Friday, there was one person who was confirmed infected and a number who showed symptoms, according to Eriksson.
In order to avoid the infection in the two nursing homes from spreading, those who show symptoms live separately and those without symptoms live separately.
Salmonella is a generally hazardous disease.
