The Social Democrats want the Riksdag's Constitutional Committee (KU) to examine whether Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) has presented too rosy a picture of this year's budget.

Sweden's economic policy spokesman Mikael Damberg claims that Svantesson misled the public when, at a press conference in Harpsund in late summer, she, according to Damberg, gave the impression that the 2026 budget was within the rules of the so-called fiscal policy framework.

She has given an incorrect picture of financial sustainability, Damberg says at a press conference.

He has requested that KU review Svantesson's handling of the budget, as well as the government's statements and communications about the budget.

Damberg says the savings target has not been achieved in a single year during Svantesson's time as minister. The reason, he says, is large and unfunded tax cuts, not loans for defense or aid to Ukraine.

Svantesson responds in a written comment to TT that the government has defeated inflation.

"At the same time, we have world-class government finances and among the lowest government debts in the EU, which gives us the strength to support the economy in a stormy environment. The Social Democrats are choosing to file a complaint with the Swedish Constitutional Court. That surprises me."
