The Russian captain of a ship that rammed the Swedish-owned Stena Immaculate in the North Sea will stand trial in London on Monday.

On 10 March last year, the Solong struck the Stena Immaculate, which was anchored in the North Sea. A large jet fuel tank ruptured, contributing to extensive fires. In addition, large quantities of plastic pellets were spilled into the sea - over 16 tonnes were later cleaned up on beaches in Lincolnshire.

A Filipino crew member on the Solong, whose captain is the now-indicted Russian, disappeared during the accident. He has never been found, but is presumed dead. The Russian is therefore being tried for manslaughter.

The Stena Immaculate was chartered by the US military, which contributed to speculation that it had been an attack. However, British authorities have since ruled this out.

The trial is being held at the Old Bailey in London and is expected to last several weeks.
