Ørsted is to invest in an energy storage system using Tesla batteries in the UK, writes the Danish energy company in a press release. The aim is to stabilise the energy supply to the UK and reduce the risk of soaring electricity prices.
The battery storage facility – which is to be commissioned in 2026 – is to be built in Swardeston, outside Norwich in eastern England, on the same site where Ørsted has a land-based conversion facility for the offshore wind farm Hornsea 3. When completed, it will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
The storage system will have a capacity of 600 megawatt-hours, equivalent to the daily energy consumption of 80,000 British households.
