The announcement comes a day after the army accused forces loyal to the military leader Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya of having launched a cross-border attack together with the RSF – which means the first accusation of direct Libyan involvement in the Sudanese civil war.
In a statement, the RSF says that its warriors "liberated the strategic triangle area" and that the country's military has withdrawn south "after suffering heavy losses".
The area, a mountain range stretching over approximately 1,500 square kilometers, has long been known for mining activities and cross-border trade.
A former army officer tells AFP that the RSF's control over the area gives a "lever effect over supply routes" that run across the border between Libya and Sudan.
The RSF has been at war with the military since April 2023. The war has so far killed tens of thousands of people, displaced 13 million and created what the UN has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
