Just over a year ago, plans were presented for an extensive renovation of the 125-year-old opera house in central Stockholm. At the time, the idea was that the opera's operations would move out on July 1, 2026, but the move was postponed by almost six months.

There has never been a set move-out date, but it has looked different at different times, says Fredrik Lindgren.

The move is underway.

In early April, the Opera will present the repertoire for the final autumn season in the opera house for a long time. After that, the operations will move to the Gasometer, a new stage housed in an old gasometer in Norra Djurgårdsstaden.

The hope is that performances will be able to begin playing there in March or April 2027.

I was there myself just last week and it looks incredibly exciting. It will be a spectacular addition to Stockholm when it comes to stages and concert venues. We are really looking forward to being able to offer great performing arts up there, says Fredrik Lindgren.

But there is a lot that needs to fall into place before we get there.

SEK 3.5 billion

The upcoming renovation is estimated to cost 3.5 billion kronor and is the State Property Board's most extensive project to date. The Opera House, including historic restaurants such as Operakällaren and Operabaren, will close for several years and is planned to remain closed until 2032.

Many high-profile large-scale Swedish construction projects have been delayed and over budget recently. Are you sure the schedule is on track?

I assume that everyone involved is working very hard to keep this on schedule. We all want the activities in our beloved opera house to start as soon as possible.

The opera and ballet will be moved to the Gasometer in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, a relatively new district in northern Stockholm.

The Young Opera will have a permanent stage in the premises of the Museum of Performing Arts in central Stockholm.

Rehearsal facilities for the Royal Orchestra will be in the Musikaliska kvarteret at Nybroplan, where administration and archives will also move.
