The proportion of employed individuals who become ill due to stress and pressure at work has increased sharply over the past year. It is primarily women within healthcare, care and education who are affected.

The Swedish Work Environment Authority's annual work injury report shows that the notifications of work-related illnesses amounted to 13,500 last year. This is an increase of 13 percent, compared to the previous year.

More than half of the cases of illness are linked to factors such as too high a workload, too high a workload, understaffing and limited opportunities to influence how the job is to be done. It is precisely these causes that have increased the most, by 30 percent, and especially among women. The notifications are most common in care and nursing, public administration and education.

”The development is going in the wrong direction and it is serious. We see a continued large increase in work-related illnesses caused by an unhealthy workload. This is a structural problem where several of us need to gather to achieve a sustainable solution”, comments the Swedish Work Environment Authority's Director-General Lars Lööw on the report in a press release.
