TV4's Football Channel was the first to reveal that Gustavsson and the Swedish Football Association had reached an agreement, but the association's board of directors needed to give their formal approval before the replacement for Peter Gerhardsson could sign.
"I really look forward to taking on the assignment in the fall and meeting the team and all the supporters. At the same time, I would like to thank Kim Källström and the board of directors for giving me this trust", says Gustavsson.
The contract extends over the European Championship 2029, a championship that Sweden can host together with Denmark.
"Really Impressed"
Peter Gerhardsson will leave after the European Championship this summer. He took over after Pia Sundhage in 2017.
"It feels important that from now on it's not about me, but about the team getting the opportunity to prepare for the summer in the best possible way. I'm really impressed by how the national team has performed over a long period of time and look forward to following them during the European Championship", says the future national team captain.
Tony Gustavsson was previously considered to take over the Swedish men's national team together with Olof Mellberg a year ago, but was then tied to a contract with the Australian women's national team.
Gustavsson left the Australian women's national team after a failed Olympic Games in Paris, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
He has won two World Championship gold medals and one Olympic gold medal as an assistant coach in the USA women's national team.
"Great Tactical Knowledge"
The Swedish Football Association's football manager Kim Källström comments on the recruitment:
"With Tony Gustavsson, we get a national team captain with great tactical knowledge and important experience of leading national teams. We like the football philosophy and leadership that Tony stands for and are incredibly pleased and happy to be able to present him as the new national team captain starting after the European Championship".
Källström continues:
"Tony knows Swedish football and at the same time has great international experience as a coach, which will be important in the work to get the women's national team to continue challenging for medals in the major championships."
