Reporter Cut from Viola Davis Interview Over Politics Question

A reporter on P1 Culture was thrown out of a digital interview with Hollywood star Viola Davis earlier in the week. The reason was that Davis did not want to answer questions about American politics – despite the fact that the film she was to be interviewed about deals with it.

Viola Davis plays the President of the USA in the upcoming action film "G20", which is about a G20 meeting. When reporter Emma Engström was to conduct an interview with Davis, she was told that no comparisons with reality were allowed.

These days, one often conducts interviews with big stars digitally, and then one has PR people who filter in. Just a few minutes before the interview, I'm told that I'm not allowed to ask questions about politics, but only about the film, she says in P1 Kulturnytt.

Hollywood star Viola Davis runs a company that works for increased diversity. The company has produced the film, with a Mexican female director.

The film is about politics and is incredibly topical. It portrays an American president who is a black woman. It takes place at a G20 meeting in South Africa, where it is actually held this year. Recently, the USA chose not to attend because they think South Africa uses the meetings as a way to conduct opinion polls, among other things, on diversity, says Emma Engström to Dagens Nyheter.

Emma Engström was shut out of the interview after asking Davis how she views the development, where, among other things, the film company Disney will no longer work with inclusion and diversity.

The PR representative then announced that Viola Davis had become uncomfortable with the question.

One cannot make completely unreasonable demands, such as that a journalist is not allowed to talk about reality. I got angry afterwards, because I felt limited in my work, says Emma Engström to DN.
