Perhaps best known as one half of the seminal duo Sly and Robbie, which he formed with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, Dunbar was also a pioneer in introducing electronic drums into reggae, laying the foundation for the modern dancehall genre.
Sly Dunbar also made cross-border collaborations with, among others, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, the Fugees, Britney Spears, Serge Gainsbourg, and Joe Cocker.
He also won two American Grammy Awards.
Sly Dunbar was 73.
