Last spring, a white-tailed eagle was found dead in Böda Ecopark on Öland. The eagle was hatched and ringed in the Gryt archipelago in 1989 and, at 36 years old, became Sweden's oldest known white-tailed eagle to date.
An autopsy showed it was carrying an old gunshot wound.
"There is no indication that the gunshot wound was the cause of death. Nevertheless, it is of course sad that the eagle was shot at some point during its life," said Anna Lotsander, state wildlife coordinator at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, in a press release.
The oldest known white-tailed eagle in the world is a female who in 2022 was at least 37 years old when she nested in southern Denmark.
