During the last autumn and spring semester, 39,100 students lost their grant due to invalid absence, which corresponds to almost eleven percent and is 1,000 more than the previous academic year.

This is the highest percentage of high school students ever to have their study grant withdrawn, CSN announces in a press release.

The figures differ between different municipalities. In Gotland County, the percentage is the highest, where just over 14 percent had their study grant withdrawn during the last academic year.

The increase has been going on for a longer period and the reason has not been established yet, but CSN's analyst Peter Engberg believes it may be due to several factors.

"The schools have become better at following up and reporting invalid absence to us," he says in the press release.

The study grant goes to students at upper secondary school, who are between 16 and 20 years old.

Upper secondary schools in Sweden are responsible for reporting invalid absence to the Central Study Support Board, CSN.

If the absence for a student is more than four hours and is repeated during a month, the study grant risks being withdrawn.
