There are reports of record audiences for Swedish performing arts. But a new survey from the National Theatre indicates that fewer and fewer people are taking part in the performing arts.

Of the 3,171 people surveyed, 51 percent have participated in performing arts – defined as theater, musicals, opera, dance and circus – in the past year.

In 2023, the proportion was 63 percent.

67 percent say they want to take part in more performing arts. The reasons they don't are: it's too expensive (43 percent), lack of time (37 percent) or a lack of options where they live (23 percent).

While fewer people say they are taking part, the Swedish Agency for Cultural Analysis reports that attendance is increasing at the country's cultural stages, and SVT reports new records.

A smaller proportion of the population who can afford it and live close to the offerings take part in the performing arts, and can do so several times - thus selling more tickets, says Dritëro Kasapi, theatre director at Riksteatern.
