The origin of the indictment is a high-profile raid on a mosque in Tyresö, south of Stockholm, this spring. The trio is also being prosecuted for participating in a terrorist organization, along with a fourth man in his 60s.
This is an important indictment. A thorough investigation has been conducted and it has taken a long time, says Magnus Ranstorp, terrorism researcher and associate professor of political science at the Defense University.
According to the indictment, the individuals, all of whom have ties to an Islamic cultural association in Tyresö, are alleged to have acted on behalf of the terrorist group IS in Somalia.
Ranstorp is not familiar with the defendants previously. He notes that in this type of context, it often involves influential preachers around whom a cell forms with individuals.
Often, these individuals have a checkered background, they can be converts or criminals, he says.
What does this indictment mean?
It is a reminder that the security situation is heightened, and that it has major consequences. It is important to continue focusing on and combating the threats that exist in society.
