Macron "emphasized France's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity” and urged Russia and Ukraine to initiate negotiations for ”a solid and lasting solution to the conflict”, the Élysée Palace statement said.
According to a statement from the Kremlin, Putin is said to have "reminded" Macron that the war in Ukraine – which was started by Russia's large-scale invasion – is a "direct consequence of the Western world's policy”.
The Russian president is also said to have emphasized that any potential peace agreement should be "comprehensive and long-term, remove the fundamental causes of the crisis in Ukraine and be based on new territorial realities”.
The war began on February 24, 2022, with Russia launching a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, after already entering the neighboring country in 2014, which then led to the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and a largely frozen conflict in Donbass in the east.
Regarding Iran, the two presidents decided "to coordinate their efforts and to speak to each other again soon to jointly follow up on this issue", according to the Élysée Palace statement.
