Pro-Palestinian protests broke out in Paris on Wednesday evening, in connection with a controversial gala organized by French-Israeli far-right figures.
The gala, which aimed to raise money for Israel's military, was attended by, among others, Israel's ultra-nationalist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, according to Haaretz.
The demonstrators had signs demanding peace and an end to the genocide in Gaza – and calling for Smotrich to be expelled from the country.
The situation is tense in Paris, not least ahead of Thursday evening's football match between France and Israel at Stade de France, for which over 4,000 police officers have been deployed to prevent potential violence. The match is considered a "high-risk match" following last week's Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam, which ended with violence by and against Israeli supporters.
