A new system for handling radioactive waste from new nuclear reactors must be built up, according to the government's investigator Pernilla Sandgren. The current system, where Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management (SKB) plays the main role, is not sufficient.

The responsibility for handling waste from new nuclear power plants looks in the proposal essentially the same as the existing system.

But it requires, according to the investigator, a new national organization – probably a limited company. New nuclear power producers will have to connect to it.

It will also require new intermediate storage and final repositories, as well as new processes for research and development.

A difference from today's system with SKB – which would remain in place in parallel – is that a new nuclear power operator in Sweden can leave the national waste organization as soon as the final storage of the waste is financially and physically secured.

The Swedish National Debt Office is working alongside the government's investigation to develop fee models to secure financing for the handling of nuclear waste from new nuclear power.
