Shlosberg has been detained since June last year, first under house arrest and then in pre-trial detention. He is one of the few Russian opposition figures who has chosen to remain in Russia. He was convicted on Monday of discrediting the army and spreading false information about the Russian military.

The background is a social media post, according to several Russian exile media. On February 25, 2022, Shlosberg posted a picture of what the front page of the British newspaper Daily Mirror looked like that day. The picture showed a bloody woman in Ukraine, a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the text "Her blood... his hands".

Another reason for the accusations is a YouTube broadcast where Shlosberg debated the war with a Russian historian.

During the trial, he repeated his demand that the war must end.

No political reshuffle is worth the deaths of so many people, he said in his closing argument.

The human rights organization Memorial classifies Shlosberg as a political prisoner. The sentence was one year shorter than Russian prosecutors had requested.

Shlosberg is vice chairman of the anti-war party Yabloko, which was recently barred from running in the Russian parliamentary elections.

A formal basis for that decision was that the party had received contributions from Russians who had previously received money transfers from abroad. Russian oppositionists in exile see the decision as a way for the Putin regime to avoid a war-critical party in the election campaign.

Several people were arrested on Monday outside Russia's Supreme Court, where the party unsuccessfully appealed the decision.
