Pope Leo XIV has for the first time intervened in the discussion about abortion in the USA and highlights contradictions in what is considered "pro-life".

Someone who says "I am against abortion but I am for the death penalty" is not quite "pro-life", says the Pope, who was born in Chicago.

The statement comes after a conflict within the American Catholic Church about plans to give Senator Dick Durbin an honorary award for his work in helping immigrants. Some bishops have opposed the award since Durbin supports the right to abortion.

At the same time as the Pope points out the contradictions, he emphasizes that both sides should be respected.

Someone who says "I am against abortion but I agree with the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the USA", I do not know if it is "pro-life", he says.

The Catholic Church's doctrine opposes abortion and the death penalty.
