To the sound of ringing church bells, the coffin slowly made its way through the Vatican City, carried by about a dozen people. The procession went from the Pope's residence to St. Peter's Basilica, where a funeral ceremony will be held on Saturday.
During the ceremonial procession, the coffin was surrounded by cardinals in red robes and guards in traditional uniforms. A singing choir was also present.
On St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City, thousands of spectators have gathered to catch a glimpse of the open coffin. When the coffin was carried across the square and into St. Peter's Basilica, the crowd began to applaud, according to media on site.
Once inside the church, a ceremony was held where the cardinals bid farewell to the Pope.
But ordinary people also have the opportunity to say goodbye. For three days, the public will be able to visit the Pope's coffin in St. Peter's Basilica, where it will be open for viewing.
Saturday's funeral is expected to be attended by heads of state and government from around the world, including USA's Donald Trump, France's Emmanuel Macron, and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyj. From Sweden, both Ulf Kristersson and the royal couple will attend.
