The American immigration authority used the Pokémon game series' slogan "gotta catch 'em all" to market Washington's tougher stance on immigrants.

Last week, the US Department of Homeland Security published a clip on the social media platform X showing a raid by the immigration authority ICE.

Armed police and border patrol put handcuffs on people who are identified as illegal immigrants, while the Pokémon series' famous signature music plays in the background. The video is edited with images from the animated Pokémon series showing the main character Satoshi, known as Ash, when he throws "Poké balls" - tools used in Pokémon to catch and store wild monsters.

Nintendo's Pokémon franchise denied any involvement in creating or publishing the video.

"We have never approved the use of intellectual property rights that we control," the company's PR department stated in a statement to AFP.
