For 20 years he has been part of the organization around the Red Bull Formula 1 team. Now 82-year-old Helmut Marko is retiring – with a monster parachute.

During his years at the Austrian team, Marko has worked closely with the junior program and helped develop stars such as Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

"We have achieved everything I ever dreamed of together. I am forever grateful for your belief in me," Verstappen writes on Instagram.

One of his latest apprentices is Swedish-British Arvid Lindblad, who will drive for Red Bull next season.

"Thank you for everything Dr. Marko. For your faith in me and all the opportunities you have given. I am eternally grateful," Lindblad writes on Instagram.

It is said that Marko himself chose to break his contract, which extended beyond 2026. However, according to the German Bild , he will still receive his salary for the entire contract period - around ten million euros, equivalent to approximately 108 million kronor.

"Missing out on the world title by a hair's breadth this season has touched me deeply and made it clear to me that now is the right time for me personally to end this very long, intense and successful chapter," Marko said in a statement.

The Austrian is the latest in a trio of high-profile departures from the team this year. In July, long-time team principal Christian Horner was fired, and earlier this year, chief designer Adrian Newey also left to work for Aston Martin next season.
