When the patient sought care, an X-ray of the carotid artery was never performed, despite a known hereditary risk of carotid artery disease. If the injury had been detected earlier through X-ray examination and the correct treatment had been initiated, the death could have been avoided, the region writes in a press release.
The patient visited the emergency room twice. On the first occasion, a hiatal hernia was thought to explain the symptoms, and on the second occasion, they were thought to be due to gallstones.
The chief physician has submitted the case to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate for assessment under lex Maria.
