One by one, they skied out of a competition likened to "Bambi on slippery ice." Swiss Loic Meillard handled Schladming's icy course best and won the World Cup giant slalom.

Above all, the first run in Schladming was a parody.

"I have never skied on slipperier ice than this in my career. The skis are not made to be skied on a skating rink," said Norwegian Timon Haugan, who ended up fifth after the first run, to Viaplay.

Olympic qualifier Fabian Ax Swartz finished 17th after completing the final part of the second run with only one pole after the other got stuck in a gate.

William Hansson was one of 18 skiers who crashed out in the first run. In the second, 28 of 30 managed to finish the run.
