The school building collapsed in the middle of the afternoon prayer. Two days after the collapse in Indonesian Sidoarjo, more than 90 students are still missing.

Hundreds of rescue workers are searching for survivors in the rubble. At least three people have been confirmed dead, but since at least 91 school students are still believed to be buried in the debris, the death toll is feared to rise.

Outside the school, relatives have gathered in hope of a miracle. Crying and cries for help have been heard from within the rubble and rescue workers have tried to send in water and oxygen. It is a race against time – and furthermore, the work is complicated by the fact that the building is unstable and is feared to collapse again.

The school collapse occurred on Monday afternoon, local time, when about 100 students at the Muslim boarding school in eastern Java had gathered for prayer.

Around 100 people have been taken to hospital, many of them with head injuries and broken bones. The majority of those affected are boys aged 12–18.
