Magnus von Horn's film had its premiere at the film festival in Cannes last year and revolves around an illegal abortion clinic in Copenhagen after World War I.
The director was born in Gothenburg, but has lived in Poland for a long time. "The Girl with the Needle" was Denmark's Oscars bid. Sweden's Oscars bid "The Last Journey" was knocked out in an earlier stage of the process.
Also, the Swedish-Danish-Iranian director Ali Abbasi's film "The Apprentice" is highlighted by the Oscars jury. The drama received two nominations in the acting categories. The film, which is about Donald Trump's rise in the business world in New York in the 1970s and 80s, is very controversial in the USA, where the current president tried to stop it.
Borås resident nominated
Now, Sebastian Stan, who plays Trump, has been nominated for the award for best male lead, and Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump's mentor Roy Cohn, has been nominated for the award for best male supporting role.
Also, the Swedish documentary filmmaker Hanna Aqvilin from Tosseryd in Borås municipality can call herself an Oscars nominee. She is one of three producers behind the documentary "Black Box Diaries", which is about a notorious Japanese rape case.
The French film "Emilia Pérez" received the most nominations, 13 in total, followed by "Brutalisten" and "Wicked" with 10 each.
"Emilia Pérez", by French director Jacques Audiard, is a Spanish-language musical about a cartel leader whose highest dream is to become a woman. The film's lead actress Karla Sofia Gascón makes history as the first openly trans person to receive an Oscars nomination, in the category for best female lead.
Rossellini nominated
Among those who received their very first nominations are Demi Moore and Ariana Grande, for "The Substance" and "Wicked", respectively. Also, Isabella Rossellini received her first nomination, for her performance in the film "Konklaven". But she still has a way to go to catch up with her mother, Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, who won three Oscars and received four additional nominations during her long career.
The presentation of the nominations has been postponed twice due to the fires in the Los Angeles area. Several voices have been raised to cancel the Oscars ceremony altogether, but now it will take place, even if the usual glamour will be toned down after the devastation that has hit the film capital.
The ceremony itself will take place on March 2 in Los Angeles, with Conan O'Brien as host.
